Makoshika State Park

Walk a real dinosaur trail at Montana’s largest state park that features badland formations and the fossil remains of Tyrannosaurus Rex, Triceratops and more. You’ll find a visitor center at the park entrance with interpretive exhibits great for kids! Explore the park and disc golf, hike trails, bird watch, and if you’re here for the night be sure to look up for clear night skies.

Disc Golf Courses

Enjoy one of two unique disc golf courses in Makoshika State Park. The first course, Makoshika Buccaneer Flats (9 holes), is next to the Lower Group Use Shelter and is currently ranked the Best Course in Montana by users of the UDisc app. Buccaneer Flats is an easier and far more open option than the upper course, this course is still great for all skill levels. It is challenging for amateur players while still providing a test for pro level players. The second course, Makoshika Ponderosa Pines, starts near the trail head of Cap Rock Trail above the switchbacks. Ponderosa Pines course will test your skill set and your endurance with a challenging mix of open holes and tunnel shots through tightly wooded fairways. Additionally, it features 18 holes each with multiple pin locations for a variety of unique layouts. Both courses are PDGA Certified!

Archery Range

Makoshika State Park’s archery range located in the Southern area of the park near the Lions Club Camp. While at the range, you have amazing views of the badland formations that make up Makoshika State Park. There are two courses each with 14 shooting stations with targets at different yardages and shooting difficultly. The park hosts special archery events during the summer months. The range is free to use and open to the public from May 1st (weather permitting) till weather permits. The park is working on improvements that will enhance archers experience while at the range.

Camping

There are 28 camping sites throughout the Park with multiple unique camping options. Travelers are able to reserve the teepee, sheep wagon and newest addition a yurt. Water is available in the first mile of the park. Makoshika State Park is currently working on a campground expansion project that will expand the number of RV campsites and amenities offered in the park. There is no dump station for RVs at Makoshika. RV’s and campers over 20 feet in length are restricted to the first two miles and are not allowed beyond the switchbacks.

Events and Programs

The park offers special events throughout the year, including Montana Shakespeare in the Park, Friday night campfire programs and youth programs in summer, and the famous Buzzard Day festival, the second Saturday in June, featuring 10k & 5k races, a fun run, jumping house, food, disc golf tournament, hikes and more!  2024 Program Schedule 

Venue Rentals

Makoshika State Park has a variety of scenic venue rentals for parties, weddings, festival events, runs and more. The amphitheater hosts many weddings each year and Shakespeare in the Park. The A-Frame and Lions Camp are wonderful locations away from other park goers to have your own gatherings and overnight stays in one of the cabins or A-Frame. The two pavilion locations are ideal for picnics and family reunions with disc golf near by and trails to keep the kids busy. Find more information here!
